Carretto was awarded the second place prize of 2.000 EUR by Prof. Dr. Geert ten Dam, President of the UvA Executive Board, as a recognition of her work on Taste Before You Waste. The AUV-alumnus prize is designed to recognise and encourage young UvA alumni who are involved in projects which make a special contribution to the betterment of society. To bring these projects to the attention of a wider public, the Amsterdamse Universiteits Vereniging (AUV, alumni association of the UvA) organises the yearly AUV-Alumnus Prize. The prize is given out during the AUV-day, which occurred last Saturday. This year the theme of the day was “Democracy and Elections.”
First prize went to Renée Frissen for OpenEmbassy, an online platform that allows recent migrants to the to pose questions digitally to volunteers regarding issues with getting settled in the Netherlands. The third prize was awarded to Jacob Schaap for his work with the sport programme Boxing: A game of life, which provides lessons and activities related to boxing and self-defense for Syrian children living in refugee camps throughout Lebanon.
Founded in 2012 by Luana Carretto, Taste Before You Waste is an Amsterdam based non-profit focused on the prevention of food waste. The concept is ingeniously simple: collect food from grocery stores and markets that would otherwise be thrown out for cosmetic reasons and distribute it through charities, hosted dinners, ‘giveaway markets’ and a variety of other events. Through their efforts, hundreds of kilograms of good food per week have been saved from being needlessly discarded. The group of dedicated volunteers continues to work throughout the Amsterdam area and is constantly developing inventive ways to raise awareness about reducing food waste.
Throughout her time at AUC, Carretto worked to grow the initiative, which now involves many AUC students in gathering food, preparing meals and hosting events.
AUC would like to congratulate Luana for her accomplishments.
