Abstract

In this guest lecture, Sammia-Sarafina Elbakry will introduce the basics of international law. She'll explain the role of the United Nations and its framework of treaties and institutions. She will also further discuss the legal definition of terms used in the politics surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, such as 'human rights', 'colonization', 'occupation', 'apartheid', 'segregation', 'annexation', 'sovereignty', 'self-determination', 'self-defence', 'genocide', 'ethnic cleansing', 'rights of indigenous peoples', 'freedom fighters', and 'terrorists'. The objective of this lecture is to provide insight into how international law works and to create more awareness of how legal terms are often taken out of their legal context to serve political interests.
