He studied Social Philosophy at the University of Moscow, and Sociology at the Central-European University (Warsaw) and at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he received his PhD in Sociology in 2005.  Before joining AUC, Maxim taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Leiden University, and conducted postdoctoral research at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies. He has authored "The Soviet Empire of Signs: A History of the Tartu School of Semiotics" and co-edited "Empire De/Centered: New Spatial Histories of Russia and the Soviet Union." His teaching and research interests include classical and contemporary sociological theory; science studies and the social history of human sciences; history and theory of nationalism and empire; sociology of media, art and cinema; and Russian/Soviet society and culture.
