The Graduation Ceremony for the Amsterdam University College (AUC) Class of 2024 took place on Thursday 11 July at Koninklijk Theater Carré. The event marked the culmination of three years of hard work and dedication for the graduates and featured a series of speeches, musical performances and the ceremonial conferring of degrees.

The ceremony was hosted by AUC student and External Relations Officer/Vice-President of the AUC Student Association, Uma Claessens, and featured an opening speech by Prof. Martin van Hees, the Dean of AUC, the Valedictorian speech by Anna Cermelli and a tutor speech by AUC lecturer and tutor Luis Suarez.

Around 250 students' names were read as they walked the stage to receive their ceremonial certificate and yearbook from Dr. Anco Lankreijer (Chair of the Board of Examiners) and Kasia Malarek (Admissions Officer & Lecturer).

Notably, the graduation ceremony was also marked by several unannounced, student-led pro-Palestinian protests, and expressions of sympathy with the victims of the war in Gaza. This included a last-minute variation of the Valedictorian speech addressing the topic.

Four musical performances by graduating AUC students added a personal touch to the ceremony:

  • First interlude - A piano-accompanied performance of "Vienna" by Billy Joel by graduating students Josie Piech, Sofia Uleman and Nora Steller.
  • Second interlude - A self-choreographed piece by dancer Alizée Junco to "Sarabande from Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major," as performed by cellist Amelie Fehler.
  • Third interlude - Cat Gelderloos and her self-composed piece "Roaming" on the piano.
  • Fourth interlude - Júlia Celma Werthwein, Andrea Valderrey Nuñez and Julia van Adrichem, performing a rendition of "A Million Dreams" by The Greatest Showman and "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield.

At the end of the ceremony, all students were welcomed to the AUC Alumni Association by Gerylaine Campos, AUC's Alumni & External Relations Officer, who highlighted the resources available to them for networking and future support. The afternoon officially came to a close with the ceremonial hat throw followed by a reception where graduates, their families and friends honoured their achievements.

AUC congratulates the Class of 2024 and expresses gratitude to all those who contributed to the ceremony.
