An on-campus sample lecture for students thinking about applying to AUC
The sample lecture is part of the University of Amsterdam's 'Experience Days.' You can sign up now using the link below. Simply select “Liberal Arts and Sciences (AUC)” to reserve your spot.
This session is designed especially for students interested in the Sciences major, but all students are warmly invited to join!
This activity will not discuss the AUC programme. It is meant to give participants a sense of what a lecture is like at AUC. If you would like to get more practical information about studying at AUC and the academic programme, please find more options for study orientation activities on our website.
While the AUC programme focuses on many of society's big issues, sometimes it's important to explore the very small. Pioneered by physicists and chemists, the interdisciplinary field of nanoscience now finds many diverse applications. Interactions at nanometer length scales, after all, explain the behaviour of complex materials, the building blocks of our information technologies and the workings of biological systems. Advances in nanoscience have already and will continue to improve many technologies, including photovoltaics, medicine and computers. This lecture will introduce the field of nanoscience, and show how studying the small is leading to big changes.
Prospective students who are thinking of applying to AUC frequently want to know what a class is like. With the diversity of courses offered, it can be difficult to choose a single representative class, as AUC students also take lab courses, conduct fieldwork outside of the classroom, participate in group work, immersive projects, give presentations and the subject matter often spans the Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities. Nevertheless, we want to give prospective students the opportunity to get a feel for how course material is presented, the style of lectures and how subjects are approached in the classroom.
