Amsterdam is central to the history of the global counterculture of the 1960s, a status that is perhaps best investigated by visiting the places where it happened. Our walking tour will start at the Spui, the "Magic Center of the Magic Center," with the statue of 't Lievertje (where the Provos and the Kabouters once ruled) and the Maagdenhuis, which was occupied by students more than once in the 1960s, and many times since then. Then we will witness some of the "sacred places" of the feminist movement known as the Dolle Mina's before visiting the very first Dutch commune, at Singel 52, and ending at the Homomonument.
After the tour, we will gather for dinner at a nearby restaurant. Participants who register for the full experience (tour and dinner) will have their dinner covered by the AUC Alumni Association. Those who choose to join for dinner only are welcome to do so, but please note that in this case, the cost of the meal will be at your own expense.
