History Lab: An experiential approach to studying history

'History Lab' is an AUC course that immerses students in multifaceted methods essential for studying the past. The course underscores the pivotal role of primary sources, ranging from archival documents to quantitative data, to showcase diverse toolkits historians use to document and interpret history. In the first half of the course, students gain foundational skills through lectures and hands-on exercises, providing a comprehensive understanding of what historians do. The second half of the course involves the practical application of these techniques, with students contributing to a current research project. This hands-on experience offers insight into the intricacies of historical inquiry.

Holland Land Company

For the January 2024 edition of History Lab, students worked on making the archive of the Holland Land Company more accessible to the wider public by discovering unique stories and digitising key parts of the archive. Started in 1795,  the Holland Land Company facilitated the buying and selling of land in the United States by wealthy residents of Amsterdam, including New York.
