Tackling the crisis of liberal democracy, Hanafi addresses the obstacles to meaningful debates that lead to increasing polarisation and de-democratise public spheres. To tackle what he calls symbolic liberalism, he offers a “dialogical sociology” as an alternative approach. We will discuss with Professor Hanafi his analysis and vision for the future of liberal democracy, and the role of public sociology in defending and strengthening it.
Sari Hanafi is a Professor of Sociology, Director of the Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies and Chair of the Islamic Studies programme at the American University of Beirut. Hanafi served as the President of the International Sociological Association (2018-2023) and is currently a fellow of the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies.
