Jaap Heringa teaches the course Genomics and Bioinformatics at AUC. He obtained his MSc degree in Mathematical Biology, Bioinformatics and Population Genetics and his PhD (Cum Laude) in Bioinformatics from the University of Utrecht. He gained industrial experience in software development at IBM's International Network Development Centre (INSDC, Uithoorn, Netherlands; 1984-1988) and has worked at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL, Heidelberg; staff researcher 1988-1996) and the MRC National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR, London; group leader and senior scientist 1996-2002). Since 2002 he is full professor of Bioinformatics and director of the Centre for Integrative Bioinformatics (IBIVU) at VU University of Amsterdam. Since 2008 he has also served as chairman of the Education Committee and in 2010 became Scientific Director of the Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre (NBIC). His areas of research are Bioinformatics and Systems Biology.
