Alison Gilbert is currently an assistant professor with tenure at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She is Australian and has a master’s degree in environmental studies from Macquarie University. In 1985 she came to the Netherlands and obtained her PhD in 2006. Her research interests are diverse. She has publications on dryland, mangrove, river catchment, coastal,and marine ecosystems, and has used a variety of methods including indicator development, systems analysis, resource accounting, simulation modelling and multicriteria analysis. Much of her research has been conducted in multidisciplinary teams and specifically targets policy or supports policy development. She has been teaching university students too long to remember. She is keen on sports and is a competitive swimmer, but her favourite leisure activities are scuba diving or lying on a beach.
