An online sample lecture for students thinking about applying to AUC
You can now register for the Social Sciences sample lecture on 14 December by using the link below! Please note that this activity will not discuss the AUC programme. It is meant to give participants a sense of what a lecture is like at AUC. If you would like to get more practical information about studying at AUC and the academic programme, please visit the page dedicated to choosing your study or sign up for an Open Day.
Lecturer and Tutor at AUC, Dr. Anne de Graaf will deliver the lecture "Youth combatants, victims or perpetrators?” An AUC senior lecturer in Social Sciences, Dr. Anne de Graaf will explore the narratives around so-called child soldiers, drawing on her own research into the role of young people in peacebuilding and conflict.
This sample lecture touches upon the AUC Social Sciences course ‘Peace Lab’ where students learn about peacebuilding, peacekeeping and peacemaking. Conceived and organised by Dr. Anne de Graaf, ‘Peace Lab’ is a qualitative research methods class focusing on peace-building fieldwork and learning through first-hand interactions with individuals, institutions and various organisations in post-conflict regions. During the Peace Lab course students visit Kosovo (June) or Rwanda (January) to explore reconciliation and peace building from various perspectives. Dr. Anne de Graaf also teaches the course 'Human Rights and Human Security.'
Prospective students who are thinking of applying to AUC frequently want to know what a class is like. With the diversity of courses offered, it can be difficult to choose a single representative class, as AUC students also take lab courses, conduct fieldwork outside of the classroom, participate in group work, immersive projects, give presentations and the subject matter often spans the Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities. Nevertheless, we want to give prospective students the opportunity to get a feel for how course material is presented, the style of lectures and how subjects are approached in the classroom.
For this sample lecture, the entire activity will take place online so that you can experience what a class is like and to better understand how course material is discussed.
