In this introductory first lecture of the "Making sense of mass violence" seminar series on social groups in conflict, the following questions will be addressed: how do social conflicts become violent? How does generalised violence escalate into mass violence?
Speaker: | Prof. Dr. Abram de Swaan is an essayist, sociologist and professor emeritus at the University of Amsterdam. In 1996, he became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
