Ten years of excellence and diversity at AUC

Established in 2009, Amsterdam University College is a joint excellence initiative of the University of Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offering a Bachelor’s degree programme in the Liberal Arts and Sciences. Founded with the assistance and support from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the City of Amsterdam, AUC now counts over 1500 alumni, 900 enrolled students and more than 70 lecturers and staff members as part of its ever-growing community. Over the past 10 years, AUC has continued to take innovative steps in order to proudly live up to its motto of “Excellence and diversity in a global city”.

In 2016, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Murray Pratt, the AUC community produced the strategic vision and living document titled AUC 21: Our community’s vision for excellence, diversity and global citizenship. The document encapsulated the multitude of viewpoints, ideas and hopes based on the input of the entire AUC community about how to best prioritise the ambitions and aims for the five-year period between 2017–2021. With the final stages of implementing this strategic vision approaching, the 2019-2020 academic year is a significant moment for AUC to reflect on how the institute has evolved, celebrate the progress that has been made and to deliberate on how to continue to uphold values of excellence, diversity and the importance of an internationally anchored worldview in times of rapid change in both higher education and society.

Celebrations in honour of AUC's second Lustrum

In honour of this milestone, AUC will be hosting a series of special Lustrum-related events throughout 2019-2020. These events will bring various groups of the wider AUC and local communities together in order to critically engage with the notions of excellence, diversity and internationalisation through celebrations, community participation and academic enquiry.

The year-long programme will commence with the 10th Dies Natalis ceremony where AUC will look back on the experiences and achievements of staff, students and alumni during our first 10 years. Throughout the evening, there will be speeches, lectures, videos and interactive elements for guests to enjoy, including reflections from both Prof. Dr. Geert ten Dam (President of the Executive Board, University of Amsterdam) and Prof. Dr. Vinod Subramaniam (Rector Magnificus, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), as well as a keynote address by Prof. Dr. Teun Dekker (first Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences Education in Europe, University College Maastricht).

Other events will follow throughout the year and will include alumni dinners, student celebrations, special guest lectures in the Who's In Town series, community service projects and a special edition of the annual Capstone Seminar in June.
