Europe by People, the cultural programme accompanying the 2016 Netherlands EU presidency, is set to involve AUC students taking the 300-level interdisciplinary theme course “Global Civil Society”. From April through June, the extensive and multifaceted cultural programme will connect renowned international scholars, creative thinkers, artists and students from many disciplines and institutions to share insights and co-create ‘solutions for everyday living’.

FabCity: campus for urban innovation

A temporary urban testing ground, FabCity, is being built on Java Island in the east of Amsterdam; just a 10-minute bike ride from the AUC campus. It will be the headquarters where students, scientists, citizens and artists will look into contemporary social and urban issues both in Amsterdam and throughout the EU through the lenses of arts and design. Consisting of around 50 different pavilions and installations, the programme is diverse and consists of musical acts, lectures, exhibitions, panel discussions, screenings and much more.

Some 50 AUC students participating in “Global Civil Society” will join or create projects relevant to both the course and the aims of Europe by People throughout April and May. Students enrolled in this course study topics related not only to globalisation, but also examine the consequences of such global change as they relate to international and European institutions, peace and security, migration, concepts of justice, human rights and other pressing societal issues. As an open programme, FabCity and Europe by People invite guests to visit their temporary campus between 11 April and 26 June. The speakers, exhibitions, workshops and other events being held at FabCity reflect the interdisciplinary nature and values of AUC, as the effort is a collaboration that pushes the boundaries of conventional working fields of academics, artists, politicians and creatives coming from a variety of educational, institutional and vocational backgrounds.

The first event being organised in coordination with AUC student initiative Right2Education is set to take place on Thursday, 14 April when Syrian activist Maha Ghrer will host an open class at the Network Democracy Dome from 18.00-20.00.
