The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science recently released their report “The value of knowledge: Strategic Agenda for Higher Education and Research 2015-2025” [De waarde(n) van weten: Strategische Agenda Hoger Onderwijs en Onderzoek 2015-2025] in which the AUC student initiative Jeugdlab is mentioned as a leading example of cooperation between higher education and the local community.

The report, presented by Minister Jet Bussemaker, contains an overview of the Dutch government’s future plans, ambitions and policies for further strengthening higher education over the next ten years. Based on research, interviews and visits to universities and colleges across the Netherlands, the agenda discusses how these institutes must continue to meet the needs of students and society, yet also adapt to the demands of a world that is changing more rapidly than ever.

The ten year strategy acknowledges the various tensions that exist within the realm of higher education, including issues of democratisation, accessibility for diverse groups, balancing affordability with quality and the cooperation between higher education and various segments of society.

It is within the context of this last point in which Jeugdlab is mentioned as an excellent example of how students link the world of higher education to the local community, while receiving something in return. Founded in 2013 by a small group of AUC students, Jeugdlab creates engaging activities with an educational twist to spark children’s interests in exploring sciences, arts, languages and sports. In return for these sustained efforts, AUC students have been able to use the Jeugdland terrain to start the AUCafé, a highly demanded student-run bar/café for AUC students.

One of the few initiatives mentioned in the report, Jeugdlab stands as just one example of the many endeavours of AUC students receiving well-deserved appreciation for their hard work.
