Focus on Russia and Eastern Europe: Is Marx to blame for Stalin?
Focus on Russia and Eastern Europe Lecture Series
Marx’s was a philosophy of freedom and emancipation, but he was hardly appreciative of human rights and we can’t just ignore his references to proletarian dictatorship. Would it be fair to regard Stalinism – ideology and practice – as one of the possible legitimate outcomes of Marx’s philosophical musings? If ideologies tend to adapt to condition and ambition, to what extent do they contribute to shaping ambitions?
