AUC new building

Students about AUC new buidling

The video below shows what students have to say about the AUC new building.

New Academic Building at science Park Amsterdam

A brand-new academic building is built for AUC at Science Park Amsterdam in the Watergraafsmeer district, close to the AUC student residences. This new building is due for completion in 2012. AUC will then leave the Plantage area, and be entirely located on its campus in the Science Park Amsterdam.

In February 2011, work on the new building started. In the video above, students talk about their expectations of the new building.

Construction progress

Construction is moving along fast. The picture below shows the new building only one year after the construction started.

Via the link below you can follow the construction progress of AUC’s academic building through a UMTS connection. Every half hour a new image is displayed.

The video above shows the construction progress of AUC’s academic building from the last couple of months.

The story of the longest water pipeline in the World

AUC Joins the Pipe

In the new AUC academic building two Join the Pipe water taps will be installed. Jointhepipe.org is a community of tapwater drinkers- people joining from different parts of the worlds to build the longest water pipe ever seen, long enough to bring water to those without. To join the pipe means to give everyone the chance to drink clean water. The proceeds of the jointhepipe.org Foundation are used to finance water and sanitation projects in underdeveloped countries. For more information see Website Join the Pipe.

Science Park Amsterdam joins forces for sustainable energy management

On Friday, 11 November 2011 the University of Amsterdam (UvA), National Institute for Subatomic Physics (Nikhef) and DUWO Student Housing signed an agreement to jointly invest in a heat and cold storage system at Science Park Amsterdam. Initially, the system will reduce CO2 emissions by 290-350 tons. In future, however, the figure could rise to approximately 450 tons. The Nikhef data centre, over 600 DUWO student housing units and the new Amsterdam University College (AUC) building will all be connected to the storage system.

The agreement with the operator, Cogas, is the result of a joint effort by the various partners to ensure sustainable energy management in the western area of Science Park Amsterdam. The project represents a substantial expansion of investments in heat and cold storage systems at Science Park Amsterdam.

Cogas will complete the first stage of the project in April 2012 connecting up the AUC to the heat and cold storage system. Following this, the cooling system for the Nikhef data centre will be connected in the summer. The student housing units to be constructed by DUWO will be provided with sustainable heating over the course of 2013. Thanks to support from the municipality of Amsterdam, the Kea residential building will also be connected to the sustainable energy supply in the near future.

Topping out ceremony new AUC building

On 21 September 2011, a topping out ceremony was held for the new Amsterdam University College (AUC) building in the presence of the contractor, subcontractors, builders, architects and the prospective users, the AUC students and staff. AUC is a joint initiative of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the VU University Amsterdam (VU).

Paul Doop, UvA Executive Board

Paul Doop, acting president of the UvA Executive Board, Francine Houben, founder and creative director of Mecanoo and Roelant Stegmann, president of the AUC Student Association, were full of praise for the new university building. This teaching facility, covering 5800 m2, will include lecture rooms, a reading room, a common room, project rooms, conference rooms and workspaces. The large windows in the building offer ample light and a panoramic view of the Science Park complex.

The building will officially open September 2012. AUC is currently housed in a building in the Plantage district of Amsterdam, where the first batch of AUC students commenced their studies in September 2009.

The UvA commissioned the new AUC building. Mecanoo architects were responsible for the building design and the construction company M.J. De Nijs & Zonen BV is the main contractor.
