Roundtable Discussion: Amsterdam in the 21st Century

In this Roundtable Discussion, six panel members will reflect on the major challenges that Amsterdam will face in the 21st century. Panel members will discuss what they think these challenges will mean in areas such as politics, government, population, urbanization, city planning, and culture.

The Roundtable Discussion is organised as part of the "Imagining Amsterdam: Visions and Revisions" Conference taking place 19-21 November 2009.
Panel members are: Jeroen Dewulf (UC Berkeley), Marieke de Goede (UvA), Arjo Klamer (Erasmus University Rotterdam), Christoph Lindner (UvA), Angela Serino (Redlight Art Amsterdam), and Markha Valenta (UvA). Chair: Marijk van der Wende (AUC).

Diabetes: Impact of a common chronic disease

invites AUC students and staff for an interdisciplinary symposium on diabetes and the impact of a common chronic disease. The programme approaches the issue from angles varying from medical treatment to clinical informatics to social implications for the city of Amsterdam.

Who’s in Town: Iran: Fractures in an Islamic Republic

Sohrab Behdad, Denison University

Professor Behdad was born and raised in Iran. After completing his Ph.D. in economics at Michigan State University in 1973, he returned to Iran, where he taught at the Tehran University until 1983. He then "left Iran and left the university to the gang of hezbullah" who "purified" the university and reformed Iran's economy to be islamic. His current research focuses on the political economy of Iran, and Islam and public policy.

The seminar will be at the Artis Library. 16.00 - 17.30

18.10 Panel moderated by Marc van Gelder, the CEO of Mediq and an alumnus of the Wharton School.
