Conditions for eligibility to pay the statutory tuition fee

In general, nationals of EU/EEA countries (including the Netherlands) are eligible to pay the statutory tuition fee level for their studies at AUC. But only if they meet all three of the following conditions:

  • Nationality
  • Residence
  • Registration/enrolment

Students who do not meet all three of these conditions (more details are given below) and are not eligible to pay the statutory tuition fee level have to pay the tuition fee level for non-EU/EEA students.

Meeting the nationality condition

The nationality condition is met by:

  • students with a nationality from an EEA member state, including Dutch students (see list below)
  • Swiss and Surinamese nationals
  • students with a non-EEA nationality who are eligible for a Dutch study grant (studiefinanciering) from DUO (formerly known as IB-Groep)

EEA member states are:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria
  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Iceland
  • Italy
  • Ireland
  • Latvia
  • Liechtenstein
  • Lithuania
  • Luxemburg
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Romania
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • United Kingdom

If you do not meet the nationality condition, you should expect to pay the tuition fee level for non-EU/EEA students.

Meeting the residence condition

The residence condition is met by students who live in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, or in one of the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony or Bremen, at the start of and throughout their studies. AUC students meet the residence condition, as they all live in the AUC student residences in Amsterdam throughout their studies. To be able to prove they meet the condition, AUC students register with the municipality of Amsterdam at their AUC student residence address.

Meeting the registration/enrolment condition

You meet the registration/enrolment condition if you are registering for a Bachelor programme and have not already obtained a Bachelor degree in the Netherlands.
If you have already obtained a Bachelor degree in the Netherlands before you start your studies at AUC, you will not meet this condition. In this case you should expect to pay the tuition fee level for non-EU/EEA students.

'Long-term' students and higher statutory fee

A statutory tuition fee raise for so-called ‘long-term students’ (langstudeerders) has been introduced by the Dutch government. A long-term student is a student who has been enrolled with a university for a period longer than the nominal study duration plus one additional year. The nominal study duration for a 180-credit programme is three years.

From academic year 2012-2013, long-term students who are paying the statutory tuition fee will pay an additional surcharge. Students can apply for a tuition fee loan (collegegeldkrediet) for the total amount of this higher statutory tuition fee.

The surcharge only applies to long-term students paying the statutory tuition fee.
