In this talk, Dr. Joyce Goggin (AUC Head of Studies for the Humanities and UvA Associate Professor of Literature, Film, New Media) will discuss strategies undertaken by the city of Amsterdam to incorporate its Red Light District under the "I amsterdam" brand.
This talk will focus in particular on the RED A.i.R programme, whereby artists and art professionals in residence in the Bergstraat and the Korsjespoortsteeg are subsidized to reflect on the relationship between aesthetics and the socio-economic development of the city. In light of this project, a number of issues concerning the image that the city strives to project in a global community of high-profile, branded cities will be addressed through the city's shared history with commerce, innovation, artists and prostitution. Joyce Goggin will be joined by discussant Michael Deinema.
