Preparatory maths summer courses for prospective AUC students

AUC students are expected to start at AUC with good skills in mathematics.  For students invited to study at AUC with gaps in their mathematical skills, AUC together with the Korteweg de Vries Institute offer some preparatory mathematics summer courses to address these deficiencies.

Course Pre-calculus (for prospective Science majors)

• Short recapitulation of elementary algebraic operations.
• Inequalities
• Coordinates in the plane
• Functions, graphs, and quadratic formula
• Trigonometric functions
• Limits of functions
• Limits at infinity
• Tangent lines and slopes
• Derivatives, derivatives of trigonometric functions
• Differentiation rules
• Extrema of functions

Robert A. Adams, Christopher Essex, "Calculus. A complete course", 7th edition, Pearson education. (This is also used during the AUC first-year Calculus course.)

Course Pre-statistics (for prospective Social Science majors)

Topics

• Picturing distributions with graphs, describing distributions with numbers.
• Introducing probability, general rules of probability.
• Binomial setting and binomial distribution, binomial probabilities.
• Expectation, variance, rules for functions of random variables, all for discrete distributions.
• (if time permits): some calculus subjects concerning functions and differentiation.
