English proficiency requirements

Open book

It is essential that you enter AUC with very good written and spoken English, as the programme is taught in English, and you will have to do a lot of studying and writing in English. If you are offered a place at AUC you therefore need to meet our requirements in English before you can start your studies. If you do not (yet) meet our English requirements, any offer of a place will be conditional on your filling this deficiency before you start your studies. For example, by attending a summer school and taking one of the tests listed below.

Exemptions

You do not have to send us proof of your proficiency in English if you belong to at least one of the following categories:

  • You are an English native speaker.
  • Your diploma that qualifies you to enter higher education was completely taught in English.
  • You achieved/will achieve a final grade of 8 or higher in English on the Dutch VWO diploma.
Studying

Level of English required

If you do not belong to one of the above categories, then you have to send us proof (test results) of your English language skills, or indicate which proof you will submit. Here are our minimum requirements: you will need to meet one of these, or an equivalent.

  • TOEFL:
(paper based): overall score of 600, with a Test of Written English score of 5.5
(computer-based): overall score of 250, with Test of Written English score of 5.5
    (internet-based): overall score of 100
The institutional code for AUC is 5209
  • IELTS: overall score of 7.0 (with at least 7.0 in each of the four components)
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): grade A
  • Cambridge Certificate for Proficiency in English (CPE): grade C

You must make your own arrangements to take any of these tests, and pay any fee required.

For TOEFL, the institutional code for AUC is 5209.

Alternative proofs

AUC may accept other, alternative, proofs of proficiency, e.g. grade of 13 (sehr gut) in English on a German Abitur when taken as an achievement/main/intensive course; English Language GCSE, IGCSE or O-level at grade B; International Baccalaureate Standard level English at grade 5; European Baccalaureate English at grade 70%.

If you wish to submit such a grade as your proof of proficiency, you must state this on your application. The Admissions Committee will then decide if it is equivalent to the minimum requirements.

Yet to take the test?

If you cannot supply proof of your proficiency in English at the time of application, you have to indicate which test or proof you will be submitting. For example, you can indicate that you expect to get grade 8 in English on your Dutch VWO diploma, or that you will be taking the TOEFL.

NB: AUC needs to receive the proof before you can be admitted. So if you are invited to study at AUC, you must still take the test/achieve the grade! You must be able to submit the proof to AUC by 15 July for a September start.

Please note that AUC expects students to meet the admissions requirements in the way in which they indicated on their application. Any changes must be requested in writing in advance, so that the Admissions Committee can decide if they accept the alternative proof.

For example, if you say on your application you will take the TOEFL, but then achieve a very high grade in English on your secondary school diploma, you cannot simply cancel your TOEFL and submit your secondary school diploma instead. You must first check with the Admissions Committee that the alternative proof will be accepted.
