On 5 January 2010, Dr. Tiago da Mata was awarded the faculty of Economics and Business lecturer of the year prize, the Van der Schroeff award. Students nominated a total of 17 lecturers for the award. Dr. da Mata teaches a number of courses on Economic History and Methodology at the Faculty of Economics and Business and at Amsterdam University College. Among his students, he is most known for the various techniques he uses during his lectures to get them involved and bring their understanding of the topic to a higher level.
The Faculty of Social Sciences at the Vrije University have named Dr. Elly Konijn, Social Science lecturer of the year. Dr. Konijn's contributions have been recognised both by fellow faculty members and her students. She had previously been recognised by students in the "Give Your Teacher a Compliment" campaign and fellow colleagues repeatedly name her as a model lecturer in the VU's annual survey on education. Dr. Elly Konijn specialises in media psychology and teaches a course in Communication at AUC. Her interdisciplinary background in psychology and communications give students the opportunity to extend their knowledge in both fields. Dr. Konijn's passionate and patient approach to her teaching allows her to effectively communicate her knowledge to her students.
Dr. Bart van Heerikhuizen
During the 378th Dies Natalis at the University of Amsterdam, AUC lecturers Dr. Bart van Heerikhuizen and Dr. Hugo Heymans were awarded with special prizes that highlight the qualities they bring to their teaching. Both also teach at AUC.
Dr. Bart van Heerikhuizen was honoured with an award for the most "interdisciplinary and approachable" lecturer at the UvA. Even after decades of teaching, Dr. van Heerikhuizen has continuously been able to surprise his students, placing sociological theories into context, bringing sociology to life and making it accessible to all of his pupils. He lectures to an extremely diverse group of students, in three different disciplines. His students describe the classroom as his natural habitat and claim that summer vacation is the most difficult time of the year for him, as he would rather be teaching. Dr. van Heerikhuizen teaches the course "Classic and Modern Sociological Thought" at AUC.
Dr. Hugo Heymans was honoured with an award for most "inspiring and insightful" lecturer. As the head of the Emma Children's Hospital, Dr. Heymans combines his research and teaching duties with real life medical practice. He applies a similar approach to his lectures, where he teaches his students to treat sick children by having his young patients be part of his lectures. His students are inspired by his energy, enthusiasm and vast knowledge. Dr. Heymans not only communicates difficult material in a manner that students can understand, he is also able to convey to students that in order to be great doctors, they must also have the right attitude. Dr. Heymans will be teaching the course "Mechanisms of Disease" at AUC this spring.
