FAQs for incoming students

Can the courses I registered for be changed?

During the first week of classes there is an Add/Drop period. The courses that you chose prior to arriving at AUC can be changed during this period (space permitting). Your course choices for the rest of the year will be determined in consultation with your tutor during individual meetings.

Are students allowed to have a double major, or a major and a minor?

It is possible to have either a double major or a major and a minor. We, however, do not recommend a double major because it places serious constraints on your course planning as you must meet all of the requirements of both majors.

Can we take more than 5 courses per semester?

If your GPA is 3.0 or higher after the first semester (end of January) you can, if you'd like, take six courses during the following semester BUT keep in mind that there is no reason (in terms of graduation requirements) to take on an extra course and that the extra course that you take on will count as any other course - once you commit to taking the course you will not be allowed to drop it. You want to be sure that the work load isn't too much! You should also discuss with your tutor whether it is wise to take an additional course.

Please also be aware that taking additional courses will not shorten the time required to get your degree.

Do I have to take all of the required courses in the first semester?

No, your first year will be a mix of required courses and also disciplinary courses that will introduce you to your intended area of study.

Are the disciplinary courses on the registration form only available in the first semester?

In most cases, the disciplinary courses on the registration form are only available in the first semester. The remaining first year courses will be offered in the second semester.

Why should I choose a Big Questions Course in a field outside my major?

The Big Questions courses are intended to offer you an introduction to the "big questions'' of our different areas of studies. They are an excellent opportunity for you to explore a new area because they do not assume any prior knowledge.

I am unsure of my major, can I take statistics in the second semester?

Yes, it is possible to study Basic Research Methods and Statistics I in the second semester.

Is it possible to sit in on lectures at the VU or UvA?

In your 2nd and 3rd year you can also take a 5th course (during the 16 week term) at the UvA or VU via their Honours programme (these courses are also taught in English). The courses are usually offered in the evenings so they won't interfere with your AUC courses AND you'll receive AUC credit for taking these courses.

Can I take a second level language course in my first year if I already speak the language somewhat?

Learning a new language is considered an important part of the liberal arts and sciences curriculum, so all students are required to study a language from the 100-level to either the 200- or 300-level, depending on their major.

I have a Goethe B1 certificate in German. Would German I be too easy for me?

Language tests will be offered in the autumn to determine each student's ability in their intended language of study. If a student's knowledge is too advanced for a 100-level course, he or she will be asked to take another language.

If you are unsure which language test to take, please consult with your tutor.

Is it possible to take two language courses?

It is not possible to do two language courses in the first year, but you are more than welcome to study a second language during the course of your degree.

Will a Chinese language course be offered this year?

No, a Chinese language course will not be offered this year.
