When I finished high school, I did not want to be pinned down to one specific subject, because I was interested in a lot of different things. I was afraid I would get bored focusing on only one field. Because of this, I decided not to study medicine, even though I already had a strong interest in medicine at the time. Instead, AUC offered a very interesting broad and interdisciplinary programme, which immediately caught my attention. The sciences, which have over the past decades taken giant leaps forward, and simultaneously have become increasingly specialised, need an interdisciplinary approach now more than ever. This in order not to lose contact with the other disciplines and with the problems at hand. For this reason, I figured a Liberal Arts and Sciences approach would be a valuable addition to a biomedical sciences education. While studying at AUC I have done an extended internship at the Academic Medical Center, Department of Reproductive Medicine. Under the supervision of several professors at the department, I am performing a patient preference study to find out if patients would be interested in possible future treatment options that are now being studied extensively worldwide. When I finish my studies at AUC, I plan to pursue a Master degree in medicine.
Hello, I’m Roos, a third-year science major. My main interests are biology and medicine, but I also enjoy a literature or psychology course every now and then. When I started at AUC, I had a really broad interest: I liked biology, maths, literature, history and philosophy. Following different courses at AUC allowed me to find out what I really wanted to do (cell biology), while still being able to do all the other things I like. I’m now doing an extended internship at the immunobiology department of the Academic Medical Center about the function of plasmactoid dendritic cells, a special immune cell. Next year I’m going to continue my studies with a masters in immunology at the University of Oxford.
