Fees and costs

Studying

Overview

You need to budget for two main categories of costs if you come to study at AUC:
  • Your AUC fees
  • Your personal and daily living expenses, such as accommodation, insurance, meals, books, etc.

The overview below gives you an estimate of the cost of studying at AUC. The actual costs will vary (apart from the set fees), depending on your personal lifestyle.

AUC fees

For the 2009-2010 academic year the AUC tuition fee for Dutch and EU/EEA students is EUR 1620, the government-funded fee level in the Netherlands. The AUC tuition fee for non-EU/EEA students is EUR 9120.

#For the 2010-2011 academic year the AUC tuition fee for Dutch and EU/EEA students will be the government-funded fee level in the Netherlands, which is expected to be EUR 1672. For these students the AUC institutional fee has to be charged separately (EUR 1980). For the 2010-2011 academic year the AUC tuition fee for non-EU/EEA students will be EUR 11 242 (which includes the AUC institutional fee of EUR 1980). NB: all of these fee levels are still to be confirmed (they may need to be adjusted for inflation).

The AUC institutional fee is to support the diversity of AUC's international campus community, a high service level with respect to (international) career development, and AUC's scholarship programme.

2009-2010 academic year
Total AUC fees for Dutch and EU/EEA students: EUR 1620 + EUR 1830
= EUR 3450
Total AUC fees for non-EU/EEA students: EUR 9120 + EUR 1830
= EUR 10 950

2010-2011 academic year
Total AUC fees for Dutch and EU/EEA students: EUR 1672 + EUR 1980
= EUR 3652 (to be confirmed, may need to be adjusted for inflation)
Total AUC fees for non-EU/EEA students:
= EUR 11 242 (includes institutional fee of EUR 1980, to be confirmed, may need to be adjusted for inflation)

Enrolment is dependent on payment of the tuition fee.

AUC student housing

Accommodation

AUC guarantees accommodation for all its students - which is a huge plus, as it can be very difficult to find somewhere to live in Amsterdam. All AUC students will live in the residences on the AUC campus in the Science Park. In 2009-2010, an unfurnished one-person unit costs around EUR 360 a month in total. This amount is the total of the rent and service costs (e.g. utilities such as water and electricity, cleaning and maintenance of communal areas), plus the separate costs for the tv/internet connection and municipal taxes, and assumes you will receive rent benefit (huurtoeslag, see link below). Meals are not included, as each unit has its own kitchen area so you can prepare your own meals.

Insurance

You will need health insurance, and it is highly recommended that you also take out appropriate general third-party insurance (liability insurance). So don't forget to budget for these costs as well.

Open book

Books, meals, travel, etc ...

You will need to buy essential books for your studies, and cover your meals and drinks, your mobile phone bill, etc. etc. Have you got a bike and/or public transport pass? You will want to be able to get around the city, so bear that in mind.
You should also budget some money for unexpected expenses (if your bike gets stolen, or your laptop needs repairing or replacing, for example).

Flight arrivals

Visas and permits

If you are not a Dutch student, we recommend:

  • Visit the website of the Nuffic (Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education) and use their Student Visa Wizard to check if you need a visa and/or residency permit to study in the Netherlands (see link below).
  • Visit the Residence Wizard of the IND (Immigration and Naturalization Service) that is another source of this information, and the related costs (see link below).

Don't forget that you may need to get certain documents translated and/or legalised for your visa or permit application, which can add to your costs. You may also need to supply proof that you can support yourself financially during your studies.

For general information on arrangements you may need to make to come to the Netherlands, please visit the 'New to Holland' website (see link below), which is the official website of the Netherlands on immigration.
