You need to budget for two main categories of costs if you come to study at AUC:
- Your AUC fees
- Your personal and daily living expenses, such as accommodation, insurance, meals, books, etc.
The overview below gives you an estimate of the cost of studying at AUC. The actual costs will vary (apart from the set fees), depending on your personal lifestyle.

* "Dutch and EU/EEA" refers to those students who pay the statutory tuition fee. See also information below on who pays the statutory tuition fee. Students not eligible to pay the statutory tuition fee pay the "non-EU/EEA" tuition fee. ** Adding together rent, service costs, costs for internet/tv connection, municipal taxes, and including rent benefit (huurtoeslag). *** For non-Dutch students. The exact amount will vary according to your individual circumstances (see, for example, links below). **** From 1 September 2011.
For the 2011-2012 academic year:
- The statutory tuition fee is EUR 1713. The AUC institutional fee of EUR 2055 will be charged separately to students who pay the statutory tuition fee level (see link below). Total AUC fees = EUR 3768.
- The tuition fee for non-EU/EEA students is EUR 11 358 (including AUC institutional fee).
For the 2012-2013 academic year:
- The statutory tuition fee is EUR 1771. The AUC institutional fee is EUR 2130. On the basis of upcoming changes to Dutch legislation, AUC expects to be able to combine these two amounts and charge them as a single tuition fee of EUR 3901. As a result, students who obtain a tuition fee loan from the Dutch government (collegegeldkrediet) will be able to obtain the loan for the full amount.
- The tuition fee for non-EU/EEA students is EUR 11 491 (including AUC institutional fee).
The combined fees are used to support AUC as an intensive and small-scale study programme that offers students an enhanced learning experience and personal tutoring, to support the diversity of AUC's international and residential campus community including AUC's scholarship programme, and to provide a high service level with respect to (international) career development.
AUC guarantees accommodation for all its students - which is a huge plus, as it can be very difficult to find somewhere to live in Amsterdam. All AUC students live in the residences on the AUC campus in the Science Park. The rooms in the student residences include a mixture of self-contained units for one person: a spacious living/bedroom with a kitchen area, and a bathroom (toilet and shower), as well as units that will be shared by two students (two-room apartments and large studio apartments). In 2010-2011, an unfurnished one-person unit costs around EUR 360 a month in total. This amount is the total of the rent and service costs (e.g. utilities such as water and electricity, cleaning and maintenance of communal areas), plus the separate costs for the tv/internet connection and municipal taxes, and assumes you will receive rent benefit (huurtoeslag, see link below). Meals are not included, as each unit has its own kitchen area so you can prepare your own meals.
You will need health insurance, and it is highly recommended that you also take out appropriate general third-party insurance (liability insurance). So don't forget to budget for these costs as well.
You will need to buy essential books for your studies, and cover your meals and drinks, your mobile phone bill, etc. etc. Have you got a bike and/or public transport pass? You will want to be able to get around the city, so bear that in mind. You should also budget some money for unexpected expenses (if your bike gets stolen, or your laptop needs repairing or replacing, for example).
If you are not a Dutch student, and need to find out about the costs for a visa and/or residency permit, we recommend:
- Visit the website of the Nuffic (Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education) and use their Student Visa Wizard to check if you need a visa and/or residency permit to study in the Netherlands (see link below).
- Visit the Residence Wizard of the IND (Immigration and Naturalization Service) that is another source of this information, and the related costs (see link below).
If you are offered a place at AUC, you will be given help with the procedures for obtaining your visa and/or residency permit. Don't forget that you may need to get certain documents translated and/or legalised for your visa or permit application, which can add to your costs. You may also need to supply proof that you can support yourself financially during your studies.
For general information on arrangements you may need to make to come to the Netherlands, please visit the 'New to Holland' website (see link below), which is the official website of the Netherlands on immigration.
