Dutch students receive a student travel card (studenten OV-chipkaart) as part of their student grant, giving them free or discounted travel on Dutch public transport. Most international students do not qualify for this card, as they do not receive a Dutch student grant, and so they have to pay full fare.
International AUC students (particularly from EU/EEA countries) may be eligible for a Dutch student grant including the student travel card if they meet the following requirements (but do check with DUO - IB-Groep first):
- You must have at least 32 hours of employment per month.
- You must have an employment contract for that work.
- You must be under the age of 30 when you apply for a student grant.
- You must hold a Dutch bank account in your own name.
But beware:
- There are restrictions on the number of hours you are allowed to work if you have a residence permit for the purpose of study.
- You must not allow work to interfere with your studies at AUC.
- The income from work could interfere with your eligibility for rent benefit (huurtoeslag).
