AUC Scholarship Fund

The aim of the AUC Scholarship Fund is to further diversity and excellence in AUC's student body. Applications for an AUC Scholarship are open to all students (Dutch and international). The AUC Scholarship Fund enables students, selected on both their merit and economic need, to pursue a Bachelor's degree at Amsterdam University College.

The AUC Scholarship Fund is limited and highly selective, and only candidates who have excellent school results and a strong motivation (as reflected in their application and recommendation forms) are eligible. The deadline for scholarship applications for the 2010-2011 academic year has passed.  The deadline for scholarship applications for the 2011-2012 academic year is 1 April 2011.

The AUC Scholarship is sponsored by the VU University Amsterdam, the University of Amsterdam,  Rabobank, Shell and the Schiphol Group.

AUC Scholarships

The AUC Scholarship Fund offers two types of scholarships:

Full scholarships:
EU students: EUR 5000 per year
Non-EU students: EUR 15,000 per year

Partial scholarships:
EU students: EUR 1250 to EUR 2500 per year
Non-EU students: EUR 3750 to EUR 7500 per year

If the number of applicants exceeds the number of scholarships available, only the candidates with the highest school results and strongest motivation will be awarded a scholarship. The AUC Scholarship Fund Commission is responsible for the selection and decides whether the applicant gets a full or a partial scholarship.

In the first month of study, the student will be paid EUR 2000 (or the full amount of the scholarship, if this is less than EUR 2000). The remainder of the scholarship will be paid to the student in 12 monthly instalments. Please note that the scholarship cannot be used as a (partial) tuition fee waiver; students are responsible for paying the tuition fee themselves.

Selection criteria

Candidates wishing to apply for an AUC Scholarship must meet the following requirements.

  • Candidates must have submitted a complete application for admission to AUC. For more information on applications and admissions, see link below.
  • Candidates must have excellent school results and a strong motivation as reflected in their application and recommendation forms. The selection committee will also look at extracurricular accomplishments and activities relevant for AUC, as well as the future leadership profile/skills of the candidates.
  • Candidates must demonstrate financial need (provide proof that it is financially impossible for them to study at AUC without a grant).

How and when to apply

  • For general questions regarding the AUC Scholarship, please contact info@auc.nl.
  • If you want to apply for an AUC Scholarship, you must add an extra motivation letter to your application form, explaining why you think you deserve a scholarship.

  • In addition to your scholarship motivation letter, you must also send us proof of your financial need.
Dutch candidates can do this by confirming to us that, according to the information from the IB-Group (studiefinanciering), and based on their family income, they will receive the maximum additional grant (maximale aanvullende beurs). When they start at AUC in September 2011, these students will be asked to deliver a copy of their IB-Group declaration that they are indeed receiving the maximum additional grant.
International students need to send us copies of the salary statements of both parents or legal guardians, and preferably also their most recent tax returns.
  • The financial documents should be sent to AUC, attn. Mrs. S. Glover, Plantage Muidergracht 14, 1018 TV Amsterdam, The Netherlands, together with a signed declaration that all the documents have been filled in accurately and truthfully. (Download declaration form below.) All documents must be accompanied by the following information: full name of the writer, contact telephone number and e-mail address.

  • The deadline for applying for an AUC Scholarship is 1 April 2011. Selection will be done in April 2011, and candidates will be notified of the results of the selection at the beginning of May 2011. No correspondence with the AUC Scholarship Fund Commission will be accepted.

Conditions for receiving the AUC Scholarship

AUC Scholarships will only be awarded to selected persons who meet the following requirements. Persons who fail to meet the following requirements will be denied financial support.

  • An AUC Scholarship awardee must be fully admitted to Amsterdam University College. The AUC Scholarship cannot be transferred to another academic year or another academic programme.
  • An AUC Scholarship awardee must have satisfied all visa and residence permit requirements, if applicable (see link below).

  • An AUC Scholarship awardee must have proven both merit and financial need.
  • An AUC Scholarship awardee may not receive another full coverage scholarship for the same period of study as the AUC Scholarship. AUC must be notified (contact Mariette Diderich, see link below) if the student has been awarded another full scholarship, and which scholarship the student has decided to accept.

Conditions for maintaining the AUC Scholarship

AUC Scholarship holders must meet the following requirements. AUC Scholarship holders who fail to meet the following requirements will have to refund the financial support.

AUC Scholarship holders must maintain good academic standing: the scholarship may be terminated if the student enters a period of academic probation or has to end his or her studies before graduating.

If the AUC Scholarship holder decides to quit studying at AUC, the scholarship needs to be reimbursed in full.

Students who receive an AUC Scholarship will be evaluated after one year of study. The scholarship will be awarded for another year if the student:

  • has successfully passed the first year (the student has not been placed on academic probation);
  • receives a positive recommendation at the end of the academic year from his/her tutor and the Board of Examiners; and
  • can prove that the financial need base has not changed.

The same procedure will be followed at the end of the second year.

AUC Scholarship holders must assent in writing to the conditions attached to the scholarship before receiving the scholarship.

It is expected that AUC Scholarship holders will participate in activities with AUC sponsors and other AUC contacts, including the AUC alumni network.
