You are expected to enter AUC with good skills in mathematics. You must therefore have taken maths as an examination subject at secondary school, and achieved a good grade. For example, at least grade 8 at VWO in the Dutch system.
We will also be checking to see if your skills in maths match your academic ambitions - your level of maths will heavily influence your choice of major at AUC.
In the Dutch context: you need at least ‘Wiskunde C' skills to major in the humanities, ‘Wiskunde A' or 'Wiskunde B' to major in the social sciences, and ‘Wiskunde B' or 'Wiskunde D' to major in the natural sciences. (In the old system: ‘Wiskunde A1' to major in the humanities, ‘Wiskunde A1,2' to major in the social sciences, and ‘Wiskunde B1,2' to major in the natural sciences.)
In the International Baccalaureate: Mathematical Studies is sufficient only for a major in the humanities. Mathematics Standard level meets the requirements for a major in the social sciences, and Mathematics Higher level meets the requirements for a major in the natural sciences.
In general, the higher your level of maths, the wider your range of options for your major.
If you are invited to study at AUC but have a deficiency in your maths -- low grade, or insufficient maths for your desired major -- your place at AUC will usually be conditional on your filling the deficiency before you are admitted (e.g. improving your maths grades at school, attending a summer school before arrival at AUC). You may also be required to take some remedial maths in your first year at AUC.
