Mathematics requirement

You are expected to enter AUC with good skills in mathematics. You must therefore have taken maths as an examination subject at secondary school, and achieved a good grade. For example, above grade 7 at VWO in the Dutch system. An additional diagnostic test may be required to ensure you have sufficient skills for your desired major. In general, the higher your level of maths, the wider your range of options for your major. See also the information below on meeting the requirements for your desired major.

If you are offered a place at AUC but have a deficiency in your maths -- low grade, or insufficient maths for your desired major -- your place will usually be conditional on your filling the deficiency before you are admitted. For example, by improving your maths grades at school, or by attending a summer school before arrival at AUC. Short summer schools are also offered at AUC in late August for new students with maths deficiencies. You may also be required to take some remedial maths in your first year at AUC.

Meeting the requirements for your desired major

In the Dutch context, Wiskunde B’ or ‘D’ meets the requirements to major in the sciences, and ‘Wiskunde A’ or ‘B’ meets the requirements to major in the social sciences. ‘Wiskunde C’ is sufficient only for a major in the humanities. (In the old system: ‘Wiskunde B1,2’ to major in the sciences, ‘Wiskunde A1,2’ to major in the social sciences, and ‘Wiskunde A’ to major in the humanities.)

In the International Baccalaureate, Mathematics Higher level meets the requirements to major in the sciences, and Mathematics Standard level meets the requirements to major in the social sciences. Mathematical Studies (Standard level) is sufficient only for a major in the humanities.
