Isahac Teweldemedhin Scholarship

The Isahac Teweldemedhin Scholarship aims to support refugees with a formal status to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in the liberal arts and sciences at Amsterdam University College (AUC), a joint initiative of the University of Amsterdam and VU Amsterdam. For students looking to apply to start their studies at AUC in September 2018, the deadline for applying for the Isahac Teweldemedhin Scholarship is 1 March 2018.

How to apply

Applicants must have already submitted a complete application for admission to AUC. In order to apply for the Isahac Teweldemedhin Scholarship, candidates should additionally submit:

  • a letter of motivation 
  • an up-to-date CV 
  • a transcript of academic records
  • a list of other pending scholarship applications

Isahac Teweldemedhin Scholarship application deadline 2018

For students looking to apply to start their studies at AUC in September 2018, the deadline for applying for the Isahac Teweldemedhin Scholarship is 1 March 2018.

Selection procedure

A committee consisting of three AUC faculty members will be responsible for awarding the Isahac Teweldemedhin Scholarship. Applicants will be selected based on both merit and economic need. They must have excellent school results and a strong motivation to contribute to diversity and excellence at AUC through internationalisation, interdisciplinarity and innovation.


Costs for studying at AUC consist of tuition fees, insurance and books, accommodation and living costs (overview of cost estimates). The Isahac Teweldemedhin Scholarship will cover up to 5000 EUR per year and recipients of this scholarship will still be eligible to apply for support through the AUC Scholarship Fund (see ASF) or University Assistance Fund (UAF).


The Isahac Teweldemedhin Scholarship is funded by a grant from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs to Dr. Sennay Ghebreab in order to financially support excellent international students. The remainder of this grant will be used for funding an Teweldemedhin Scholarship for the duration of the students' study at AUC.

About Isahac Teweldemedhin

Isahac Teweldemedhin (1889-1979) was a famous Eritrean publicist, teacher and educator. He followed higher education at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, and later in Florence, Italy. He returned to Eritrea to recruit and train elementary schools teachers while promoting access to education for all. He opened the first all girls school in Eritrea in 1944 and was the first Eritrean innovator in the field of abbreviations, equivalents of weights, measures and standardization of punctuation marks in Tigrigna. In the 1950s, he became Eritrea’s Head of Education and served society with full dedication.
