Graduation requirements

First year requirements

In the first year each student takes ten courses, subject to the following requirements:

• Academic English I
• Identity and Diversity in the Global City
• Logic, Information Flow and Argumentation

At least one of the following courses:

• An introductory course in research methods
• Calculus
• Calculus and Linear Algebra

At least one of the following courses:

• Dutch I
• French I
• German I
• Spanish I

At least one of the following courses:

• Big Questions in Science
• Big Questions in Society
• Big Questions in History
• Big Books

At least one of the introductory theme courses:

• Introduction to Information, Communication, Cognition
• Introduction to Cities and Cultures
• Introduction to Social Systems
• Introduction to Energy, Climate, Sustainability
• Introduction to Life, Evolution, Universe
• Introduction to Health and Well-being

Students who have met the above requirements have met the requirements for the first year Academic Core subjects.  In addition students may choose subjects from a wide range of disciplinary courses to reach the required total of 10 courses for the first year.

Specific requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Humanities

Students take their major in the Humanities, i.e. must complete at least nine courses listed as Humanities courses.

Concentration:

• At least three of these courses must be at 300 level.
• Students must complete at least seven of the nine courses in two disciplines within the Humanities.

The following Academic Core courses must be completed:

• Academic English I
• Academic English II
• Two courses in research methods
• Identity and Diversity in the Global City
• Logic and Argumentation
• One Big Questions course
• Courses in a foreign language up to 300 level. Native speakers and bilinguals will not be able to choose any of those languages as their foreign language choice.

Specific requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Social Sciences

Students take their major in the Social Sciences, i.e. must complete at least nine courses listed as Social Sciences courses.

Concentration:

• At least three of these courses must be at 300 level.
• Students must complete at least seven of the nine courses in two disciplines within the Social Sciences.

The following Academic Core courses must be completed:

• Academic English I
• Academic English II
• Basic Research Methods and Statistics
• Probability and Statistics
• Identity and Diversity in the Global City
• Logic and Argumentation
• One Big Questions course
• Courses in a foreign language up to 200 level. Native speakers and bilinguals will not be able to choose any of those languages as their foreign language choice.

Specific requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree

Students take their major in the Sciences, i.e. must complete at least eleven courses listed as Sciences courses.

Concentration:

• At least three of the eleven courses must be at 300 level, and at least two of these must belong to the same theme.

 The following Academic Core courses must be completed:

• Academic English I
• Academic English II
• Calculus
• Calculus and Linear Algebra II or
  Basic Research Methods and Statistics
• Identity and Diversity in the Global City
• Logic and Argumentation
• One Big Questions course
• Courses in a foreign language up to 200 level. Native speakers and bilinguals will not be able to choose any of those languages as their foreign language choice.
